2009 CONNECTICUT FILM FESTIVAL SCREENWRITER’S IMMERSION PROGRAM

RULES & APPLICATION FOR SUBMISSION FOR ENTRY INTO PROGRAM:

The 2009 Screenwriter’s Immersion Program has a limited number of slots available. In order to be accepted into the 5-day program, submit a hard copy 8-10 page script or script excerpt that will be recorded and reviewed during the program. The script must meet the following criteria for consideration:

  • 8-10 pages maximum – any script that exceeds this page count will be automatically disqualified. This includes any combination of scenes excerpted from a full narrative screenplay, or a complete script for a narrative film short.
  • Each script must have no more than 6 characters.
  • All scripts must be the original work of the applicants.
  • Scripts must be for narrative features or shorts only. No documentaries.
  • Applicants can submit multiple scripts, but only one script per writer will be accepted for the program. Each script submission must include a separate $30 submission fee.
  • We strongly suggest that applicants register their screenplays/teleplays with the Writers Guild of America, East

ENTRY FEES:
The cost for submission is $30 for each script, regardless of the number of writers. If your submission is accepted, there will be an additional fee of $69 for your participation in the 5-day program.

If an accepted submission involves two or more writers as applicants, each writer will pay the full entrance fee of $69 to participate in the program.

ENTRY DEADLINE:
Submission dates have changed due to the short notice of the original announcement. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis as long as spaces are available.

ACCEPTANCE INTO THE IMMERSION PROGRAM:
Upon acceptance to the program, the entrant will have until May 10th to submit the program fee of $69.00 to reserve their space in the program. Program Fee includes participation in:

  • The Casting Call
  • Script reading and recording
  • 3-hour intensive script analysis workshop
Plus, an exclusive ticket to:
  • A two-hour master class with Hollywood screenwriter, James V. Hart (whose credits include "Contact," "Hook," and "August Rush").
  • The Creative Networking Party for filmmakers, screenwriters, producers, actors, and others involved in the filmmaking process. Your opportunity to make important connections to get your work noticed!

IF YOU ARE NOT ACCEPTED, YOU CAN STILL LEARN ABOUT SCREENWRITING!
We regret we can only accept a limited number of talented writers into the 2009 program. If you are not accepted, your submission fee will qualify you to attend two of our mainstream educational workshops held Friday June 5th and Saturday June 6th. You will also be able to attend the open casting call.

FORMAT RULES
Entry scripts should be formatted according to current industry standards.

  • Consult any popular screenwriting or teleplay writing text for assistance in following standard guidelines for format.
  • Font size must be 12 point and in Courier type.
  • Right/left margins: at least 1 inch
  • Top/bottom margins: at least ¾ inch
  • Total length must not exceed 10 pages, title page not included.
  • Pages must be numbered in the top right hand corner, with author name.
  • The title page with the following: TITLE, AUTHOR, AUTHOR'S ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, E-MAIL ADDRESS
  • NO REVISISIONS OR MISSING PAGES WILL BE ACCEPTED ONCE ENTRY HAS BEEN RECEIVED
  • Please note that script submissions will not be returned. One copy will be kept for archival purposes only for 3 years after the workshop.

WRITERS UNBLOCKED: SCREENWRITER'S IMMERSION PROGRAM

FEATURING SATURDAY MASTER CLASS WITH: JAMES V. HART

Tuesday, June 2nd thru Saturday, June 6th

A multi-day event in which screenwriters can see and hear their short script or excerpt performed at a videotaped professional reading (See Rules for Submission for details). Each attendee is assigned a 3-hour, four-person workshop, where they will work in small groups with our instructors to review and critique their scripts, and receive personalized instruction to help improve their work.

Once your film is accepted, we will do everything in our power to make your visit an exciting, comfortable and fulfilling experience; right down to a pillow to lay your head on at the end of a long day or a shoulder to lean on. All films will be eligible for Specialty Awards, winners will be determined by a panel of industry experts.

Tuesday: Casting Call for Your Script

Screenwriters are invited to an open casting call in which actors from around the region audition for parts at an all-day session run by a professional casting agent.

Each writer will work with the casting agent to select the actors most suitable for their script and schedule the reading.

Wednesday & Thursday:

Readings of All Accepted Scripts.
Each reading will be approximately 10 minutes.

Writers will direct their own readings, which will be conducted uninterrupted. The reading will be digitally recorded.

Each writer will have a 30-minute rehearsal period prior to their reading to instruct actors. Experienced filmmakers will be on-hand to offer directing guidance.

Writers are encouraged to attend as many of the readings as they wish over the 2-day recording period.

A copy of the digital recording will be given to each writer to review at the end of the session.

Friday & Saturday:

Instructional Consultation Days
3-hour Screenwriting Workshops

The screenwriters in the program will be able to sign up for a 3-hour workshop held either in the morning or afternoon on Friday or Saturday.  Each workshop will break up into groups of four screenwriters to one instructor who will conduct a personalized review of the script readings and offer specific consultation on each script.

Your entry fee includes a ticket to this exclusive industry insider's party, where writers, directors, filmmakers, and producers all have the opportunity to meet to discuss their projects with other creative people, as well as attorneys and financiers who may be present
Saturday: Master Class in Screenwriting

Writers in the program are invited to attend a special two hour master class on screenplay structure conducted by a noted Hollywood Screenwriter, James V. Hart (whose screen credits include "Contact," "Hook," and "August Rush") with the opportunity to ask direct questions.
